Green Chile Picadillo

  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef, pork, or turkey
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-2 medium potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1 can (4 oz / 113g) diced green chiles (mild or hot, based on preference)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • ½ cup (120ml) beef or chicken broth
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)

  1. Heat the Oil:
    • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Cook the Onion and Garlic:
    • Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
    • Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Brown the Meat:
    • Add the ground meat to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.
  4. Add the Potatoes and Spices:
    • Stir in the diced potatoes, diced green chiles, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  5. Add the Broth:
    • Pour in the broth and bring the mixture to a simmer. Cover the skillet and cook for about 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender, stirring occasionally.
  6. Adjust Seasoning:
    • Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary.
  7. Serve:
    • Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve with warm tortillas, rice, or as a filling for tacos.
