Old-Fashioned Rice Pudding is the kind of gentle, comforting dessert that feels like a quiet moment at the kitchen table — warm, creamy rice slowly cooked in milk, lightly sweetened, and kissed with vanilla and spice. It’s simple, soothing, and full of nostalgia, the kind of dessert that doesn’t rush you. One spoonful feels like peace and home.
Ingredients
1/2 cup white rice (short or medium grain works best)
1 cup water
4 cups whole milk
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
Pinch of salt
1/4 cup raisins (optional)
Instructions
In a saucepan, bring rice and water to a boil.
Reduce heat, cover, and simmer until the water is absorbed and the rice is tender.
Add milk, sugar, butter, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Cook over low heat, stirring often, for 25–30 minutes until thick, creamy, and soft.
Stir in raisins if using and cook 5 minutes more.
Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.
Serve warm or chilled, with a sprinkle of cinnamon on top.
