Ingredients:
– 4 cups dried apples
– 2 cups water
– 1 cup sugar
– 1 tsp cinnamon
– ½ tsp nutmeg
– ½ cup butter, softened
– 1 cup sugar
– 1 egg
– ½ cup molasses

– 1 cup buttermilk

1. Simmer dried apples with water, 1 cup sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until soft; mash into a thick filling.
2. Cream butter and 1 cup sugar, then beat in egg and molasses.
3. Whisk flour and baking soda, then add alternately with buttermilk to form dough.
4. Divide dough into 6–7 portions and roll into thin cake layers.
5. Bake layers at 350°F (175°C) for 8–10 minutes each.
6. Spread apple filling between each layer while warm.
7. Stack cakes, cover, and let rest overnight for flavors to blend.
8. Slice and serve with whipped cream if desired.
