  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour

  • 3 large egg yolks, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Custard:

  • In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar, flour, and salt over medium heat.
  • Gradually stir in the milk while whisking constantly to prevent lumps.
  • Cook the mixture, continuing to stir, until it thickens and starts to boil. This should take about 8-10 minutes.
  • Once thickened, remove the saucepan from heat. Gradually stir a small amount of the hot mixture into the beaten egg yolks to temper them (this prevents them from scrambling).
  • Pour the egg yolk mixture back into the saucepan and return to heat, stirring constantly for another 2-3 minutes until fully thickened.
  • Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and butter until the butter melts completely.
  1. Assemble the Banana Pudding:
  • In a trifle dish or a 9×13 inch baking dish, start by laying out a layer of vanilla wafers on the bottom.
  • Next, add a layer of sliced bananas over the wafers.
  • Pour a portion of the warm custard over the bananas and wafers.
  • Repeat the layers (wafers, bananas, and custard) until all ingredients are used, finishing with the custard layer on top.
  1. Chill:
  • Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight. This allows the flavors to meld and the wafers to soften.
  1. Serve:
  • Before serving, you can top the pudding with whipped cream and decorate with additional banana slices and vanilla wafers, if desired.
  • Serve chilled and enjoy!

Tips

  • To prevent bananas from browning, you can toss them in a little lemon juice before layering them in the pudding.
  • For a richer flavor, try using homemade whipped cream as a topping.

This Old Fashioned Banana Pudding is a delightful treat that will remind you of family gatherings and special occasions. Enjoy!
